IBS – Irritable Bowel Syndrome
In February 2008 the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) – a body that gives guidance to the NHS on effective treatments – published guidance for GPs and consultants, saying there was good evidence that hypnotherapy was an effective treatment for IBS(Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and that it could be recommended for chronic IBS.
The problem with IBS is that there is no known cause so doctors diagnose it by ruling out what it isn’t. It does however, cause a considerable amount of anxiety and stress for sufferers, which exacerbates the problem because stress is reckoned to be one of the main causes of IBS.
The good news is that hypnotherapy has been shown to alleviate the symptoms significantly, by reducing of stress and anxiety and addressing the levels of discomfort and pain.
Although hypnotherapy successfully treats IBS, if you suspect you are a sufferer you should seek advice from your doctor in the first instance, as it is a medical condition that needs to be clinically diagnosed.
